The Maritime University of Szczecin (MUS) called Akademia Morska w Szczecinie in Polish, is a civilian universtiy educating professionals who successfully find jobs on sea and shore. Currently education is being carried out on the three faculties: Faculty of Navigation, Faculty of Marine Engineering and Faculty of Transport Engineering and Economics, where about 4000 students is studying.
The University refers to tradition of former maritime schools in Szczecin
- State Maritime School (1947 – 1953)
- State School of Deep-sea Fishing (1962 – 1966)
- State Maritime School (1963 – 1969)
- The Maritime School of Higher Education (1969 – 2004)
This created grounds to grant the name Akademia Morska w Szczecinie (Maritime University of Szczecin), which took place on 26th February 2004.
Maritime University of Szczecin is committed to implement the most modern teaching systems. It trains European officers to maintain the European autonomy in the shipping business. Meeting the requirements of the Polish act on higher education and the International Maritime Organization, the University issues diplomas recognized all over the world. The whole university functions under the quality management system ISO 9001. MUS as the first in the world, has been given the certificate of complying with the requirements of STCW 1978/1995 Convention, issued by the Warsash Maritime Center and Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.
The University has over 100 well-equipped laboratories, a modern research-training vessel the m/v Nawigator XXI, and about 20 most technically advanced simulators i.a.: Ship Handling Simulator equipped with a 3D visual system, Anti-Collision ARPA Simulator, Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) Simulator, Vessel Traffic System (VTS) simulator, Satellite Communication System Simulator - GMDSS, Autopilot Simulator, Radar Simulator, Cargo Handling Simulator, Fishing Simulator, Graphical Engine Room Simulator, Marine Centrifugal Pump’s Simulator, Full-Mission Bridge Simulator with several virtual bridges. This makes MUS one of the best-equipped, by XXI century standards, maritime universities in the world. Training by means of simulators is considered to be the most effective method of training marine officers. Therefore, much emphasis is put on practical use of the lectured theory. Maritime University of Szczecin offer the prospective student most attractive study courses.
The University curriculum puts emphasis on practical vocational training. The University provides and organizes attractive, paid practices, which supplement gained theoretical knowledge and shape personal characteristics of prospective officers’ personnel.
Having completed the first cycle studies, each graduate receives a diploma and title of “inżynier” (qualified engineer, BSc equivalent) in the major specialization studied; the completion of the second cycle studies leads to a diploma and title of “magister inżynier” (Master’s degree). Our graduates do not take long to be promoted to managerial positions. Many work in the global fleet as officers, including the top positions of ship masters or chief engineers. Others hold responsible managerial positions in Polish and foreign maritime companies and administration.

The Faculty of Marine Engineering educates students in the field of marine power plant operation and marine machine and equipment repairs.The faculty graduates are distinguished by the very good theoretical and practical preparation for their future work.
